introducing shane downey

Shane has over 16 years of coaching and administrative experience with a deep understanding of athlete development, coach mentorship and strategic leadership. He has worked with swimmers ranging from grassroots to being qualified for Canadian Swimming Trials. As a swimmer, Shane reached the Senior National level and competed at Junior Pan Pac’s in 2010. After retiring from the sport, he discovered his love for coaching when he started working with the Calgary Swordfish Summer Swim Club.

Shane then made the decision to pursue coaching professionally and moved to Langley, BC to become the Langley Olympians Swim Club Assistant Head Coach for 4 seasons. While there he helped swimmers achieve Lower Mainland Regional, BC Provincial and Canadian National time standards.

He then became the Head Coach of the Collingwood Clippers Swim Club for 5 seasons. While coaching with CCSC he created consistent programming that enabled substantial performance and club growth. The swimmers were able to reach new heights breaking many club records and achieving Huronia Regional, Ontario Provincial and Canadian National time standards. Upon leaving his head coaching position in Collingwood, Shane was surrounded by over 50 athletes saying goodbye, bringing him gifts and lamenting his leaving.

Following his time in Collingwood, Shane accepted the Head Age Group Coach position with the Olympian Swim Club in Edmonton, AB where he worked with the Age Group Performance swimmers, while mentoring the OSC satellite coaches to ensure program consistency. During his time with the AGP swimmers, they were able to achieve their first Provincial time standards which resulted in medalling at championship competitions. Shane was then promoted into the OSC General Manager position where he worked closely with the Head Coach and the OSC BOD to develop and enhance OSC programming and club structure.

Shane has an optimistic and structured approach to coaching and strongly believes in developing all strokes and technique for long term success. He believes that constructive feedback and positive reinforcement is key for developing and supporting swimmers. He is extremely excited for his upcoming move to Kamloops and looks forward to working with the KCS swimmers, coaches and parents.

Welcome to Kamloops Classic Swimming, Shane! We are also excited to welcome you to our swim community!
